Goose Mitigation in Virginia
Canada geese are common in Virginia near ponds, lakes, golf courses, and residential communities, but they quickly become a nuisance when they gather in large numbers. They leave behind significant droppings that damage grass, contaminate water, and make walkways slippery. Their waste carries bacteria and parasites that can affect both humans and pets. Geese are especially aggressive during nesting season, often attacking people or pets who come near. Over time, their constant grazing destroys lawns and landscaping. Nesting near homes or docks can block access and create unpleasant odors. Once established, these birds return year after year and the population grows quickly. Lasers are an effective tool and relatively new to the industry. Lasers have essentially eliminated the need for trained dogs, therefore reducing overall cost to both the customer and the wildlife control operator.

What You Should Do Now
Inspection
Examine the surrounding area for nesting, loafing, and roosting sites. Determine an accurate count of nuisance resident geese, make habitat modification recommendations, and calculate the area to be protected.
Call us! Do not attempt to handle wild animals. Keep pets and children away from animals and entry points. Secure trash and food sources.
Removal
Geese are protected (under the federal migratory bird act). A permit is required well in advance of any mitigation activity.

Remember to hire a professional who is aware of state and federal regulations regarding protected species.
Prevention
Thorough mitigation techniques, such as fencing, addling of eggs, and nest removal, along with an application on the turf to discourage feeding, will effectively eliminate geese.
